Hello everyone. Japan is getting very hot since the middle of July. And this time of the year, we have summer holiday. This year, our holiday is from 10th of August to 18th of August. We call this holiday as “Obon Holiday”. Obon is an event in Japan to worship the spirits of ancestors. It is said that ancestral spirits and descendants come back to the family in the Obon period. So relatives get together and visit grave yard of the ancestors. A lot of schools and companies have holiday around the Obon period. To go home and visit the family grave is an annual event during the Obon holiday.

At this time of the period, we have many summer festivals all around Japan. They will have a lot of food stands, and fireworks at nighttime. Also, we have a traditional dance, Bon Odori. (Below picture on the left). They gather at the precinct yard of temples in the Obon season and dance with music. Bon dance is originally an event to calm the ancestral spirits that came back during Obon. However, it is enjoyed as a recreational event nowadays and the religious meaning has softened, so many people enjoy those events. At the summer festival, even local ones, they have fireworks. The number of fireworks launch at one festival is up to 40,000 in some famous places.
