About self-loaders!

Today I would like to talk about Self-Loader! The self-loader is a vehicle carrier equipped with a mechanism called jacky at the rear of the cabin that tilts the body of the vehicle, allowing vehicles and heavy construction equipment to be loaded. The name of the self-loader is a common nomenclature of the construction machine manufacturer Tadano Co., Ltd., and self-loader is also known as a carrier car.

Generally, vehicles carried by self-loaders can be roughly classified into four types.

1. Vehicles that cannot run on public roads (forklifts, wheel loaders, bulldozers, excavators, etc.)
2. Brand new car
3. Vehicles out of vehicle inspection
4. Accident car

In addition, the self-loader is used for various movements related to vehicles, such as moving vehicles used for motor sports to the racetrack. In order to handle such wide variety of vehicles, there are three sizes of self-loaders, small (2t), medium (4t) and large (10t) with different maximum loading capacities.

When loading a non-driving vehicle such as an accident car on the self-loader, we use a wire rope to pull the non-driving vehicle onto the body (loading platform). The wire and the motor used for this operation is called a winch.

Here is the description of each main features of the Self-Loader.

Winch
A cargo handling machine used to lift or move heavy objects by winding a rope or chain around the winding drum. This machine is used for lifting, lowering, transporting, and pulling objects.

Jacky

This will help to tilt the Self-Loader in order to load a vehicle, non-driving vehicles, and heavy equipment. This is normally equipped behind the left and right front wheels between the carrier and the cabin. When this part is extended to the maximum extent, the front of the truck is lifted and the rear is inclined so that it approaches the ground, making it easier to load the vehicle.

Ayumi (Flipper)
This is attached at the rear of the carrier, a board called "Ayumi board" or “road board”, or we call it “Flipper”. Some types operate automatically, and some must set it by manually. For 10 ton carrier, 1 flipper can be around 200kgs. For trucks, they are made with steel and wood. Below photo is the automatic flipper.
